This day and age, we are all aware of the harmful effects prolonged time in the sun can have on our bodies. Gone are the days of hanging out poolside with no sunscreen or shade to protect your skin. However, there is one important part of our bodies that we regularly neglect to protect – our eyes.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, more than 10 percent of skin cancers occur on the eyelids. More than 10. But we can’t just rub sunscreen directly onto our eyes – it burns way too much. So what should we do?
There are two things you can do to easily protect your eyes from the sun:
- Wear sunglasses. It seems simple enough, but we don’t do it as much as we should. And not just sunglasses that look good – they need to have adequate UVA/UVB protection to help prevent cataracts and basal-cell or squamous-cell eye cancer. When you are buying sunglasses, look for ones that offer 99 to 100 percent UV protection.
- Apply eye sunscreen. Yes – they make sunscreen specifically for your eyes. You can easily get some online, like SkinCeuticals Physical Eye UV Defense, or at your local makeup store, such as Sephora.
At Alexandria Otolaryngology Associates, we care about more than just your ears, noses and throats. We care about you. While you are out there having fun in the sun, make sure you are being smart and staying safe.
